Endomin –  Centre for Endoscopic and Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery

The ENDOMIN Network

In 2009, the ENDOMIN Centre was founded in the Hirslanden Clinic in Zurich. In 2015, a second ENDOMIN location was established at the Stephanshorn in St. Gallen. Over the last few years, fruitful surgical cooperation has also been established with the ORL Centre of the Hirslanden Clinic in Zurich, the Neuro-Spine Centre of the St. Anna Clinic in Lucerne, the Cranio Facial Centre (cfc) of the Hirslanden Clinic in Aarau and the Swiss Tinnitus Centre in Sarnen.

With Dr Nikolai Hopf and Dr Martin Hefti, the ENDOMIN Centre at the Stephanshorn Clinic in St Gallen offers a comprehensive spectrum of complex surgical procedures for the brain, skull base and spine. This includes minimally invasive and endoscopic interventions and comprehensive stabilisation procedures in spinal surgery. Highly specialised operations with the use of intra-operative imaging and monitoring are usually carried out in the Hirslanden Clinic in Zurich in cooperation with our team.

Since 2010, there has been close cooperation with the Neuro and Spine Centre at the St Anna Clinic in Lucerne. Thanks to our cooperation with Dr Oliver Hausmann, Dr Urs Mutter, Dr Zsolt Fekete and Dr Ulrich Kröger, in 2015 the operating range was expanded to include endoscopic techniques in spinal surgery.

A particularly fruitful cooperation has also been established with the ORL Centre and the hormone centre of our clinic towards the end of treating tumours of the pituitary gland and central skull base. The transnasal endoscopic technique affords a safe and reliable procedure. The gentle procedures are performed in collaboration with Dr Daniel Simmen, Dr Hans Rudolf Briner, or Dr Meike Harder. Following pituitary surgery, patients are cared for by our endocrinologists Dr Mirjam Faulenbach and Dr Lisa Sze from the hormone centre of the Hirslanden Clinic.

A multidisciplinary collaboration in the care of skull base tumours was established with the ENT practice in Sarnen and the Swiss Tinnitus Centre. Dr Markus Pfister (ENT) is an internationally recognised expert in neuro-otology and aural surgery. As an interdisciplinary skull base centre, we offer high-quality differential diagnosis, minimally-invasive surgical treatment and postoperative care – particularly in the case of acoustic neuromas – at the Sarnen Clinic, the St Anna Clinic in Lucerne and the Hirslanden Clinic in Zurich. In the radiosurgical treatment of these tumours, there is a close cooperation with Dr Thomas Mindermann, who has considerable experience in performing high-precision irradiation with Gamma Knife® and CyberKnife.

If complex tumours affect the eye socket and/or the facial skeleton, an intervention is planned and carried out in cooperation with the maxillofacial surgeon Dr Beat Hammer and Dr Denis Rohner (CFC – the Cranio Facial Centre at the Hirslanden Clinic in Aarau).

Peri-operative neurological care is provided at the Neurocentre of the Hirslanden Clinic and in cooperation with the team of Neurocentre in Bellvue. Neurovascular cases are handled in cooperation with the neuro-radiological department. The collegial collaboration with Dr Isabel Wanke, Dr Daniel Rüfenacht, Dr Stephan Wetzel and Dr Kiriaki Kollia plays a crucial role in the clarification, decision-making regarding the therapeutic options and the treatment itself.

Patients with brain tumours and metastases are cared for by the colleagues from the radio-oncology department. Each individual case is be presented to our neuro-oncology board consisting of specialists in oncology, radiotherapy and nuclear medicine. A customised treatment strategy is then developed.

Patients with acute neurological symptoms are admitted to our emergency centre where they receive primary care under the managing supervision of Dr Abraham Licht and Dr Christian Gmür. Stroke patients are cared for in the certified stroke centre by the team of Dr Achim Mallmann.

The multidisciplinary cooperation enables us to consistently offer the best possible treatment, which is customised for each patient. This guarantees safety for our patients – from the initial patient briefing to discharge and aftercare.
